The Aerosol Optical Depth fine-mode fraction and PM content service is based on aerosol optical depth (AOD) and fine-mode fraction (η) of tropospheric aerosol as retrieved from MODIS radiances - both Terra and Aqua platforms - and provided by NASA LAADS Web.
PM2.5 and PM10 sampled at the ground sites is taken as input data of this service. A meteorological characterization of the PBL is used too as ancillary data and inserted in an empirical regression model. This model permits to estimate PM2.5 content at the surface from columnar satellite fine-mode AOD.
Satellite based PM2.5 maps refer to geographical domain covering whole Northern Italy. Missing data related to various days are due to clouds' presence strongly affecting satellite aerosol optical properties retrieval.
